Horror Game Reviews

Here is a list of games that I've completed and written reviews for. Eventually, this should look the same as the full list of Quest games.

40 games in list.
Name Quest Worthy Score
Alone in the Dark 5
Xbox360, PS3, Wii
Mixing procedural mechanics with traditional linear game play proves mediocre.
yes

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Xbox
Innovative on many levels, but somewhere along the way they forgot to also make it fun.
yes

Carrier
Dreamcast
A model of mediocrity, Carrier is uninspired and formulaic.
yes

Clock Tower 2: The Struggle Within     AKA: Clock Tower: Ghost Head
PSX
Fascinating game mechanics and a truly unique approach to the horror genre is marred by inconsistent rules and trial-and-error game play.
yes

Clock Tower 3
PS2
A solid, if simple, exercise in hide-and-seek scares and fantasy horror.
yes

Clock Tower: The First Fear
SNES, PSX
A fantastic example of the way that quality horror games require neither advanced technology nor action-oriented game play.
yes
Cold Fear
PS2, Xbox, PC
A pretty but ultimately shallow and frustrating attempt at action-oriented horror.
yes

Condemned
Xbox360, PC
Condemned is in many ways a classic horror game dressed up as a first person next-gen launch title. A gem!
yes

Condemned 2: Bloodshot
Xbox360, PS3
A sequel that hits all the right notes but can't quite follow the tune.
yes

Cursed Mountain
Wii
Buddhism at high altitudes is a great premise for a horror game, but mundane problems mar the experience.
yes

D     AKA: D no Shokutaku
PSX, Saturn, PC, 3DO
One of the only mid-1990s first person pre-rendered puzzle games worth remembering.
yes

D2     AKA: D no Shokutaku 2
Dreamcast
An interesting but overly ambitious attempt at revolutionary horror-adventure game play. You got two meats.
yes

Dark Messiah     AKA: Hell Night
PSX
Obscure for no good reason, Hellnight shows us that really well designed horror games can be scary even with only the most rudimentary technology at their disposal.
yes

Darkwatch: Curse of the West
PS2, Xbox
Repetitive level design and enemies overcome an interesting theme and excellent technical execution in this Halo-inspired Old West horror title.
yes
Dead Space
Xbox360, PS3, PC
A high-end combination of Resident Evil 4 and Event Horizon that is technically excellent but ultimately unsatisfying.
yes

Echo Night: Beyond     AKA: Nebula - Echo Night
PS2
A space-horror adventure game that succeeds in creating an extremely convincing--not to mention creepy--environment, Echo Night: Beyond's only major flaw is that it is really slow.
yes

Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick
PS2, Xbox
A gory brawler that puts more emphasis on silliness than fear, with mixed results.

Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly     AKA: Rei: Beni Chou
PS2, Xbox
This sequel perfects the format defined by the first Fatal Frame, and its unique game mechanics are complemented by fantastic art and atmosphere.
yes

Fatal Frame 3     AKA: Rei 3
PS2
Girls visiting sinister Japanese buildings at night continues to be a successful formula for this series, though to be fair Fatal Frame III does have some new tricks up its sleeve.
yes

Fatal Frame     AKA: Rei Zero, Project Zero
PS2, Xbox
Innovative combat mechanics and fantastic art direction makes for one of the best games in the horror genre.
yes

Ghost Hunter
PS2
A light-hearted shooter dressed up as horror that's more fun than it should be.
yes

Halloween
Atari 2600
Interesting only for its historical significance as an extremely early horror game.
yes
Haunting Ground     AKA: Demento
PS2
Clock Tower 3 run-and-hide mechanics applied to a much more cohesive game, though the routine still gets old after a while.
yes

Illbleed
Dreamcast
Campy and weird, Illbleed is an example of resource-management game play gone all wrong.
yes

Kuon
PS2
Historical Japanese trappings can't save this short-and-painful knockoff.
yes

Michigan
PS2
Suda51 makes crazy games, and sometimes they are brilliant. Other times, as with Michigan, they are terrible.
yes

Nanashi no Geemu
DS
An extremely innovative, if somewhat dull, take on handheld horror.
yes
Obscure 2
PS2, Wii, PC
The worst aspects of a teenage slasher flick in game form: boring, trite, and occasionally offensive.
yes

Obscure     AKA: Mortifilia
PS2, Xbox, PC
A rather by-the-numbers horror game that benefits greatly from its unique two-player mode.
yes

Resident Evil 0     AKA: BioHazard 0
GameCube, Wii
Seemingly minor tweaks to the rapidly-aging Resident Evil formula end up changing the traversal strategy considerably.
yes

Resident Evil 4     AKA: Biohazard 4
GameCube, PS2, Wii
This fantastic transformation of the Resident Evil franchise manages to revitalize the series without losing its thematic core.
yes

Resident Evil 5     AKA: Biohazard 5
PS3, Xbox360
Lack of scares can't keep this action-oriented game from being loads of fun.
yes

Silent Hill 4     AKA: Silent Hill 4: The Room
PS2, Xbox, PC
It looks like a Silent Hill game, and it sounds like a Silent Hill game, and it plays like a Silent Hill game, but somehow Silent Hill 4 feels less like a sequel and more like a strange mutation.
yes

Silent Hill 5
Xbox360, PS3
A game that can't make up its mind which of the previous Silent Hill games it would like to emulate more, and suffers as a result.
yes

Silent Hill: 0rigins     AKA: Silent Hill: Origins
PS2, PSP
The Silent Hill mechanics reproduced with such exacting care that the result feels soulless.
yes

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Wii,PS2,PSP
This not-quite-perfect remix of the original Silent Hill is a fantastic new direction for the series.
yes

Siren     AKA: Forbidden Siren
PS2
Extremely innovative--and extremely difficult--entry into the horror game hall of fame. A masterpiece for those who can muscle their way through it.
yes

The Suffering
PS2, Xbox, PC
Action-centric horror done right; The Suffering is an excellent American response to the Japanese genre heavyweights.
yes

The Suffering: Ties That Bind
PS2, Xbox
Though this sequel is very similar to its predecessor, some balancing and plot problems prevent it from being completely successful.
yes

The X-Files: Resist or Serve
PS2
A textbook example of what you get when you treat game design as a list of features taken from other popular games (hint: it's not good).
yes
