Zombie V.S. Ambulence
THE Zombie V.S. Ambulance is a horror game developed by Vingt-en-un Systems (VCS) and published by D3 Publisher in 2006 as volume 95 of the Simple series 2000. It involves using an ambulance to rescue survivors from various zombie-infested locales, including city, forest, desert, and ice. Survivors must be chauffeured back to a central hospital in the middle of the map, which itself is under siege from zombies. The player can gain points by running zombies in the street down, and by returning survivors to the hospital. Survivors may also upgrade the ambulance in return for the completion of specific tasks, which also involves running over zombies. Points are awarded in a combo system that increases in value as consecutive zombie deaths occur within a small window of time. Survivors that the player has picked up may turn into zombies themselves, which interferes with the player's ability to drive. THE Zombie V.S. Ambulance was met with positive critical response, earning a 86% metacritic.com score. It was awarded the First Penguin Award at the 2006 Game Developers Conference, as well as a BAFTA (2006) and "Best Family Game of the Year" from AIAS (2007). Richard Rouse III called the game, "one of the most innovative and interesting zombie games of all time" in his book, Game Design: Theory and Practice (third edition). Despite the acclaim, THE Zombie V.S. Ambulance was never released in the United States. It received a CERO rating of 15 in Japan and a PEGI rating of 12+ in Europe, where the game was released under the name Zombie Virus. (more...)
